FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES IN UNINCORPORATED JEFFERSON PARISH, LAFITTE TO EXPERIENCE CHANGES IN CURBSIDE GARBAGE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION STARTING JAN. 1, 2024
JEFFERSON, LA – Starting January 1, 2024, residents and businesses in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte will experience changes to garbage and recycling collection as the parish transitions to new service providers.
Curbside Garbage Collection:
The existing contract with Waste Connections will expire on December 31, 2023. Beginning January 1, 2024, twice-a-week garbage collection in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte will be provided by River Birch Renewable Energy LLC, which was awarded a 5-year contract by the Jefferson Parish Council. River Birch has been providing curbside trash collection on the West Bank, but this will be a new service provider for residents and businesses on the East Bank.
Residents and businesses are asked to be aware of the following changes with the new contract: Garbage in tipper carts will be picked up twice a week, but any bagged materials will be picked up once per week and handled as bulk waste. Bulk waste, which is only available for residential units, will be limited to six (6) cubic yards per week. Any waste generated by a contractor will not be eligible for pickup. This includes waste generated by commercial tree cutters, landscapers and general contractors. Pickup dates for residents and businesses will remain the same.
Curbside Recycling Collection:
Residents and businesses in unincorporated Jefferson Parish will continue to receive weekly curbside recycling pickup through December 31, 2023. The Jefferson Parish Council selected Ramelli Waste LLC as the new curbside recycling provider for 2024 at its December 6, 2023 meeting.
A short gap in service is anticipated while a new contract with Ramelli Waste is officially approved by the Parish Council, which is anticipated to take place in January, 2024. Customers are advised to retain and use their current 18-gallon recycling bin until further instruction is provided. Customers will not see a charge for curbside recycling service on their Jefferson Parish utility bills until service resumes.
If your pickup day is:
- Monday, the last day for curbside recycling will be Monday, December 25, 2023
