FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES IN UNINCORPORATED JEFFERSON PARISH, LAFITTE REMINDED ABOUT CHANGES TO CURBSIDE GARBAGE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION
JEFFERSON, LA – As a reminder, changes to garbage and recycling collection for residents and businesses in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte took effect January 1, 2024 as the parish transitions to new service providers.
Curbside Garbage Collection:
Twice-a-week garbage collection in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte is now provided by River Birch Renewable Energy LLC, which was awarded a 5-year contract by the Jefferson Parish Council. River Birch has been providing curbside trash collection on the West Bank, but this is a new service provider for residents and businesses on the East Bank.
Residents and businesses are asked to be aware of the following changes, which took effect January 1, 2024: Garbage in tipper carts are being picked up twice a week, but any bagged materials will be picked up once per week and handled as bulk waste. Bulk waste, which is only available for residential units, is limited to six (6) cubic yards per week. Any waste generated by a contractor will not be eligible for pickup. This includes waste generated by commercial tree cutters, landscapers and general contractors.
Pickup dates for residents and businesses remain the same, with the exception of a small portion of Marrero. Residents and businesses can find their curbside recycling and trash collection days by visiting the Jefferson Parish Environmental Affairs Department page.
Curbside Recycling Collection:
Curbside recycling is paused and the drop-off recycling sites are closed while a new contract with Ramelli Waste LLC is approved by the Jefferson Parish Council. The contract is being finalized with the hope that it will be approved at the January 17 Council Meeting, according to Council Chairman Scott Walker. The Council selected Ramelli Waste as the new curbside recycling provider for 2024 at its December 6, 2023 meeting.
Customers are advised to retain and use their current 18-gallon recycling bin until further instruction is provided. Customers will not see a charge for curbside recycling service on their Jefferson Parish utility bills until service resumes.
