FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

METAIRIE ROAD AND NORTH LABARRE ROAD TO CLOSE FOR RAILROAD CROSSING REPLACEMENT

JEFFERSON, LA – Starting Tuesday, November 1, 2022, Norfolk Southern Railroad will begin the first phase of construction on its Back Belt rail line with the replacement of two Metairie railroad crossings, which will result in the following partial-day road closures:

  • North Labarre Road at the railroad crossing on Tuesday, November 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting
  • Metairie Road at the railroad crossing on Wednesday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting

Motorists traveling on Airline Drive who wish to reach Labarre Road north of the railroad tracks should detour by taking Severn Ave. to Metairie Road. Motorists on Metairie Road who wish to reach Labarre Road south of the tracks should detour by taking Severn Ave. to Airline Drive. Motorists who wish to reach Metairie Road east of the railroad tracks should detour by taking Severn Ave. to Airline Drive to the Pontchartrain Expressway at City Park Ave. Motorists who wish to reach Metairie Road west of the railroad tracks from City Park Ave. should detour by turning left on Pontchartrain Blvd. at the Pontchartrain Expressway to Airline Drive and a right on Severn Ave. to Metairie Road.

The work involves the total replacement of the railroad tracks, as well as the pavement at both crossings. This regular maintenance is performed and funded by Norfolk Southern along its privately owned infrastructure, and is necessary to keep crossings smooth for drivers and tracks safe for trains. The work is being done using pre-fabricated sections of rail to minimize the traffic disruption.
