JEFFERSON PARISH TO HOST SECOND PUBLIC OUTREACH MEETING FOR
MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN UPDATE

JEFFERSON, LA – The Jefferson Parish Department of Floodplain Management & Hazard Mitigation will be hosting its second public outreach meeting regarding the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan on Monday, May 20, 2024 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the River Ridge Library (8825 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge, LA 70123).

This meeting will provide an overview of the multi-jurisdictional planning process, with a Q&A session to follow. The focus will be on lightning and extreme heat, but informational requests related to other hazards are welcome. There will also be special activities, including a food demonstration, hazard-themed trivia and puzzle giveaways.

The purpose of a Hazard Mitigation Plan is to help state, tribal and local governments increase education and awareness on natural hazards and community vulnerabilities; build partnerships with government, organizations, businesses and the public to reduce risk; and identify long-term strategies for risk reduction with input from stakeholders and the public. Additionally, Hazard Mitigation Plans help identify cost-effective mitigation actions that focus resources on the greatest risk areas and communicate priorities to potential funders. The multi-jurisdictional planning process integrates planning efforts and risk reduction with other community planning efforts and works to align risk reduction with other state, tribal or community objectives. FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plans are not only helpful in implementing both long- and short-term community goals but are also required in order to receive Hazard Mitigation Assistance funding from FEMA.

For additional information and questions about the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, email the Jefferson Parish Department of Floodplain Management & Hazard Mitigation or call (504) 736-6540.
