JEFFERSON PARISH TO HOST FIRST PUBLIC OUTREACH MEETING FOR THE MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN UPDATE

JEFFERSON, LA – The Jefferson Parish Department of Floodplain Management & Hazard Mitigation will be hosting its first public outreach meeting to provide an update on the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan on Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Edith S. Lawson Library in the City of Westwego (635 4th St, Westwego, LA 70094).

This meeting will provide an overview of the multi-jurisdictional planning process, with a Q&A to follow. The focus will be on Tornados and Earthquakes, but informational requests related to other hazards are welcome. There will also be special activities at this meeting, including hazard-themed trivia, a Twister-Hula-Hoop contest and puzzle giveaways for the first 15 attendees.

The purpose of a Hazard Mitigation Plan is to help state, tribal and local governments increase education and awareness on natural hazards and community vulnerabilities; build partnerships with government, organizations, businesses and the public to reduce risk; and identify long-term strategies for risk reduction with input from stakeholders and the public. Additionally, Hazard Mitigation Plans help identify cost-effective mitigation actions that focus resources on the greatest risk areas and communicate priorities to potential funders. The multi-jurisdictional planning process integrates planning efforts and risk reduction with other community planning efforts and works to align risk reduction with other state, tribal or community objectives. FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plans are not only helpful in implementing both long- and short-term community goals, but are also required in order to receive Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) funding from FEMA.

For additional information and questions about the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, please contact the Jefferson Parish Department of Floodplain Management & Hazard Mitigation at 504-736-6540, or email JPFloodplain@JeffParish.net.
