FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JEFFERSON PARISH, COALITION TO RESTORE COASTAL LOUISIANA SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR TREE-PLANTING PROJECT
JEFFERSON, LA – Jefferson Parish is partnering with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) to plant 700 bald cypress trees along Marcello Canal near Bayou Segnette State Park on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25. Volunteers are needed to plant the trees, which help restore and sustain the quality of wetlands in Jefferson Parish.
Tree-planting projects like these reduce land loss and prevent future coastal erosion. In Louisiana, approximately a football field of land is lost every hour. Harvested cypress bare roots were potted in one gallon pots to allow the roots to develop and strengthen for one year inside Jefferson Parish’s greenhouse in anticipation of winter plantings.
The mission of Jefferson Parish’s Ecosystem and Coastal Management Department is to aid in the management and restoration of coastal resources through coordination with local, state, federal governments, and non-governmental organization entities by reviewing proposed development; advocating for project funding; and educating stakeholders about regional ecosystem issues.
The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to drive bold, science-based action to rebuild coastal Louisiana through outreach, restoration and advocacy.
This event will include a 10-minute boat ride to the planting site. For more information and to sign up to volunteer, visit https://connect.crcl.org/civicrm/event/list.
