BOIL WATER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR EAST BANK OF JEFFERSON PARISH
Collected samples must sit for at least 24 hours before the Jefferson Parish Water Department can analyze to determine whether the water meets potable water standards

JEFFERSON, LA – In conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), the Jefferson Parish Water Department issued a boil water advisory for the east bank of Jefferson Parish on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 due to a loss of pressure in the distribution system as a result of a major water line break outside of the East Bank Water Treatment Plant. The boil water advisory is still in effect for the entire east bank of Jefferson Parish.

The Jefferson Parish Water Department and emergency crews responded immediately and worked overnight to repair the waterline, and crews continue to work to gradually restore water pressure. The Jefferson Parish Water Department finished collecting samples this afternoon. Samples must sit for at least 24 hours after collection before the Water Department can analyze to determine whether the water meets potable water standards. This boil water advisory will remain in effect until rescinded by the Water Department.

What should residents do?
All residents are urged not to drink the water without boiling or disinfecting it first, or use bottled water. Boiled, disinfected, or bottled water should be used before drinking, ice making, brushing teeth, washing dishes and in food preparation until further notice. Boil the water for a one full minute in a clean container. The one minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a bottle or pouring it from one container to another; or disinfect the water by mixing 1/8 teaspoon of unscented, liquid chlorine laundry bleach with one gallon of water and letting it stand for at least 30 minutes prior to consumption. Mix it thoroughly. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk and should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

As a reminder, two out of three eastbound lanes of Jefferson Highway from Central Avenue to Shrewsbury Road remain closed. To avoid delays, motorists should avoid the area. The traffic detour is north to Airline Highway or south to River Road, to Shrewsbury Road and back to eastbound Jefferson Highway.

All Jefferson Parish Government facilities will be open tomorrow, January 25, 2024, with the exception of the Head Start Centers on the east bank of Jefferson Parish.
